Wind energy is a renewable energy source generated by harnessing the kinetic energy of wind. This energy is converted into electricity using wind turbines, which consist of large blades mounted on a tower. As the wind blows, it causes the blades to rotate, spinning a shaft connected to a generator, thus producing electricity. Wind energy is considered environmentally friendly because it produces no greenhouse gas emissions or air pollutants during operation. It is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and can contribute to reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Wind farms, typically located in areas with consistent and strong wind patterns such as coastal regions or open plains, are where multiple wind turbines are installed to generate significant amounts of electricity.

United States

Over the past decade, wind power in the United States has experienced remarkable growth, more than tripling in capacity. Today, it stands as the foremost renewable energy source in the nation, contributing 10.2% of total electricity generation. Beyond environmental benefits, wind energy drives economic prosperity, funneling over $1.9 billion annually into state and local tax coffers and landowner leases. With over 500 manufacturing facilities spread across 50 states, employing 24,000 individuals, wind power bolsters domestic manufacturing. Directly employing 120,000 workers, the U.S. wind industry annually averts 330 million metric tons of CO2 emissions, a figure equivalent to emissions from 72 million cars.

Canada

In Canada, the burgeoning wind energy sector is swiftly emerging as one of the world’s largest producers. By the close of 2022, Canada boasted approximately 15 GW of installed wind capacity. Aligned with its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, Canada’s electricity grid currently stands at 80% non-emitting sources. The federal government aims to raise this figure to 90% by 2030, allocating $600 million over the next five years to bolster renewable electricity and modernize the grid.

Mexico

Mexico, too, is capitalizing on its wind energy potential, with 70 operational wind projects generating 7,154 MW, capable of powering 14 million homes. These projects represent a substantial investment of $13 million (USD) and offer employment to 6,933 individuals. Projections for the future foresee an additional 2.2 GW of wind installations in Mexico, effectively offsetting 12.2 million tons of CO2 emissions—akin to removing 3 million cars from the roads.

New opportunities, new ventures in wind

The U.S. offshore wind sector promises substantial economic advantages in the coming years, as indicated by the U.S. Offshore Wind Power Economic Impact Assessment report, recently published by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). Apart from furnishing clean, cost-effective, and dependable electricity, the American Clean Power (formerly AWEA) predicts that the development of 30,000 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind along the eastern coastline could create up to 83,000 jobs.

Offshore wind stands out as a plentiful, clean energy solution, particularly suited to coastal regions where population density and energy demand are high. According to American Clean Power, U.S. developers are poised to introduce over 11.0 GW of offshore wind capacity by executing 13 offshore projects by 2026.
